I'm Back To Posting Again

First off I would like to apologize for being away for over a year.
I did not realize it has been over a year.
Shortly after the bookstore I worked in closed
I must admit I was more worried about finding a job
and had trouble picking up any books the first couple of months.
I never thought that would happen.
I found a "part-time" job about three weeks
before the unemployment was due to run out.
It is in a convenience/gas station that is open 24/7.
I do work "full-time" hours most weeks, but no benefits.
My boss is trying to remedy that
(it is not his decision to make unfortunately),
but knows I might be forced to take a different job if one comes around.
We have had some medical issues (on going) and a computer that has not worked right for months.
The computer is now fixed and for free from a family friend.
Bless his heart.
I have read 3 books by Mary Lynn Plaisance:
I posted the link to her Etsy store where you can buy them.
They are magical books that I won through Facebook by her.
They came at the mid-point of my unemployment
and gave me great pleasure in reading them.
They have become some of my favorite books
for their uplifting messages and magical "characters" in them.
She also makes dolls to go with her books
that are available for sale in her Etsy store.

"Swan Place" by Augusta Trobaugh

This version of the trade paperback came out in January 2004.
It is 290 pages.
The ISBN (13 digit) is 9780452281142.

I recently read this version of "Swan Place" by Augusta Trobaugh. I do not normally read what I like to call "regular" fiction. People who know me know I read mostly mystery, thriller, paranormal romance, and the occasional science fiction or fantasy book.

The book centers around fourteen year old Dove. Dove's family goes through many changes during her fourteenth year of life. In that year she makes friends of Savannah and Buzzard. Dove learned she is stronger than she thinks, that friendship and learning comes in different colors and ways,
and family is the most important thing in a person's life.

I found myself NOT wanting to put this book down and wondering why it has not been made into a movie yet.

Augusta Trobaugh did a great job with describing her characters (who sometimes felt like real people) and the places in her book. I could picture all of it in my mind. I realized as I was reading the book that I sometimes have a hard time picturing the characters or places in a book or the places those characters inhabit.

It is a book that I believe could teach all of us a thing or two. I do not like "preachy" books and usually end up not finishing those kind. This one teaches us without getting too "preachy", even though church, God, and spirituality are a strong theme throughout the book. It is a well written book with a strong good story to tell through a young girl who is became a kind and decent young lady.

I almost chose not to read this book, but am so glad I did.

Brisingr by Christopher Paolini Midnight Release Party Photos

I know not too many pictures,
but I will not post the pictures of other customers.
I do not have permission to.
These are of employees and friends
that came to the midnight release party
we had at the bookstore I work at.
The photos were a group effort using my camera.
Beth and Michael.
Both are friends and Michael is coming back this Christmas to help us out. One less thing and person we have to worry about. He is also an artist. Beth has a few birds and has worked in a few different fields.

Ashley

(or Miss Ashley as I have taken to calling her for some reason)

eating strawberry Pocky.

She is also a friend and colleague.

I blew up the balloons (like anyone cares---lol).

My friend and colleague Lori baked cookies.

Ashley added the Pocky and other merchandise to the table

and bought Pocky to hand out as samples (and to eat herself).

These pictures were taken after the bookstore was closed

and so did not violate the strict street date.

I like the color choice for the third book.

Rumor has it there will be a fourth;

since it is now called the Inheritance Cycle

instead of the Inheritance Trilogy.

I still have yet to personally read the books.
I know one of these days I will read them
if I ever get through the stack of books I have piling up around the house.
Too many books and not enough time.

A Couple of Reminders--Book Drive and Brisingr

I just wanted to remind everyone that book drive is still going on at Borders and Waldenbooks bookstores. The books collected stay in the community that the store is located in. If you would like to help please go to your closest Borders or Waldenbooks bookstore and either purchase a new book to donate (perhaps your favorite from childhood or your child's favorite) or even $1.00 or more toward a new book would be much appreciated.

As someone who has participated in a few book drives already I am still amazed when children receive new books here. Our company has helped in a variety of ways and sometimes the organizers bring the children in to pick out books if they are able to (when we have done strictly money donations) or when the organizers come in knowing which books the children would like.

These book drives mostly help schools in the poorer neighborhoods that do not get much money for books or after school programs that help at risk children. When a person can see the smile on a child's face when they receive a book (sometimes it is the first book they have owned) it makes it all worth while. Even the books that go to schools the children are always surprised that people care enough to help them build their school libraries.

Unfortunately we as a company can not take used books in these book drives, but if you have used books in good condition try one of the schools in the area, the public library or as in my area Cops 'N Kids (they collect books for children of all ages), a children's hospital, etc. There are many places that can use books, games, small stuffed animals, dolls, etc. as long as they are in great condition.

The book drive goes on until the end of August 2008.

As for Brisingr it is not too late to reserve a copy at any Borders or Waldenbooks bookstore. Most stores will be hosting a midnight release party for the book as they did for both the last Harry Potter and recently the Breaking Dawn books.

Brisingr's release date is 20 September 2008.

Thank You Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kim, Otto, and Publishers

I will start by saying I work in a bookstore.
If you have visited my blog before
you might have either seen a
previous posting stating that
or figured it out.
I had asked
Ms. Kenyon
if there were any possibility
in receiving promotional items
to hand out to
her fans at our store
or to perhaps to help create new fans.
Kim
(and I am guessing here...her assistant?)
sent a kind reply stating
that she would tell
Otto
(publisher?).
The package arrived
and there were
two-sided bookmarks, bumper stickers, and pins
(which my manager really got a kick out of)
and there were a lot of them!!!
I had no idea we would receive so much
and we have been having so much fun handing them out to our customers.
The customers wanted me to publicly thank everyone involved in sending the items.
I did have one young lady visiting today
and she and her mother will be visiting Ms. Kenyon in Plano, Texas.
I do not know where this young lady was from...
we just never got that far....
but she talked about the Dark Hunter series
and Christine Feehan for about an hour.
She is soooooo excited
about going to Plano
and has been enjoying all the characters
in both authors' books.
She was a real delight today.
You can still reserve
"Acheron"
at any
Waldenbooks,
Borders,
or
at
Borders.com.

Shameless Plead To Authors for Arcs or Promo Items For Our Customers

I work in a bookstore as a senior bookseller/keyholder.
We are always willing to read new books to help sell them
and ARCS very helpful in doing that.
We also look for promotional items we can give our customers to help sell books.
Things like
bookmarks, postcards, book jackets, pens,
anything that an author or publisher can provide.
Our customers really enjoy receiving items
from their favorite authors
or are will to try someone new.
If you are able to you can always send me an e-mail at
or
I also have a
Facebook page
and a
Myspace page
Then I can give you the address for the store.
Thanks for reading this and considering my request.

Contests, Author, Book Signings, Etc. Information Wanted

I give honest reviews and always say whether I bought, won, or was given an advanced reader copy (ARC) or was just given a book by an author or as a gift. I am not a professional author, publisher, et cetera and as of this moment do not get paid for my reviews.

I did work in a book store for a while until it closed in January of 2009. I like to read and read a variety of books. I buy most of the books I read, but would love to receive ARCs or free books.

I read old and new books and there are only a handful of people who's reviews I enjoy reading and I do not let them influence me much (except in maybe I will pick up a book even if that reviewer does not like it). Everyone's taste is different and if I like something does not mean somebody else will.

If you are an author, publisher, blogger, or et cetera and would like me to read something of yours or want to add information to my blog please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you very much for reading and supporting my blog.

You may contact me through my e-mail

(marylsracine@aol.com or
schneidermaryl@yahoo.com or
private message me on Facebook).
